Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Reportedly Discussing Development of AI-Driven Device
According to a report by The Information, Apple’s former director of product design Jony Ive is in talks to develop the hardware in collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
According to the report, two people familiar with the matter have announced that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive have been in talks to create hardware powered by artificial intelligence. At this stage, however, it is unclear what the device in question could be intended for. Sources suggest that it could be designed for the “AI” era.
For those who are not familiar, Jony Ive worked with Apple as its director of engineering for about 20 years and was involved in various projects between 1997 and 2019. Ive has reportedly played a significant role in the development of iconic Apple products, such as the Apple iPod. iPhone and even iPad. After leaving Apple, I opened my own design company called LoveFrom. It is said that Apple and Ive are no longer cooperating – even in consulting roles.
The report further adds that this initiative has already attracted high-profile investors, including SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Microsoft, which is already backing OpenAI in its generative AI efforts. It remains to be seen what Ive and Altman will be working on — but as a company — OpenAI appears to be doubling down on its commitment to AI.
Earlier this week, OpenAI introduced new features to its ChatGPT chatbot, including speaking and responding to prompts. ChatGPT audio and video features will be available to Plus and Business users in a few weeks. In addition, enabling the Voice feature on iOS and Android devices requires manual phone settings, while images work on all platforms.
