What We Know About Google’s Potential Plan to Make ChatGPT the Default Voice Assistant on Android Phones
Android users can soon have ChatGPT as their default voice assistant for commands like checking the weather, tracking traffic in their area, and getting the latest score updates. Recent reports suggest that Google could let its users change their default voice assistant on Android phones. This means you can manually switch the voice assistant, which has mostly been Google Assistant for Android users.
But using ChatGPT as an alternative is sure to appeal to millions of Android users if the update eventually goes public. Google hasn’t officially shared details about this big change in Android, but thanks to trusted tipster Mishaal Rahman, it looks like Android will be ready for these updates in the coming months.
Android’s ChatGPT app has hinted at a new option that could make the OpenAI-owned chatbot the default option for Android phones.
It’s interesting to see Google considering these changes, especially since it has a ChatGPT competitor in the works and is already available in the form of the Gemini Nano, but so far only on the Pixel 8 Pro model. That being said, Google Assistant will get a new avatar with Bard AI integrated in the coming weeks, which could give it more ammunition to compete with ChatGPT.
Also, the value of a well-established voice assistant delivering results compared to a powerful but slightly underdeveloped AI chatbot for smartphones cannot be underestimated. After all, OpenAI has recently been criticized for its vague policy of seeking data to train and develop its AI models.
The company is even facing copyright lawsuits from creators and media organizations for its abuses. So, until OpenAI succeeds in dropping the data-stealing tag, people may feel safer using Google’s existing features than risking their privacy, which is easy when an AI chatbot has access to your smartphone.
