What we know about the possibility of Google’s Pixel Fold 2 having a larger display

Google is working on a new version of the Pixel Fold, the successor of which is called the Pixel Fold 2. The device is likely to be announced at the Google I/O 2024 conference, which is scheduled to be held on May 14 this year. Amid the frenzy surrounding the smartphone, several alleged renders of the device have surfaced online, suggesting that Google’s upcoming foldable is likely to feature a significantly larger display.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), has shared a post on X where he talked about the Pixel Fold 2’s size specifications. In his post, he wrote: “Pixel Fold 2 leaks don’t have the screen sizes right. 8.02″ for the fold screen and 6.29″ for the cover screen. Production of boards starts in April! It’s coming.” With panel production starting in April, it’s highly likely that Google will unveil the new device at its I/O event a month later.

The rumored 6.28-inch cover panel on the Google Pixel Fold 2 will feature a significant increase in screen size compared to its predecessor. The original Pixel Fold has an outer screen size of 5.8 inches, while the inner screen has a foldable 7.6-inch screen.

This means that the Pixel Fold 2 may have a longer and narrower cover display than the Pixel Fold. This could prove to be a huge plus for Pixel fans and users, as the newer screen size could eliminate the initial issues of opening apps when opened in landscape mode.

At the heart of the upcoming Google Pixel Fold 2 is also a brand new processor. The successor to the Pixel Fold is expected to include the yet-to-be-announced Tensor G4 chipset. This could also lead to the latest foldable debuting alongside the upcoming Pixel 9 series in October. However, it is possible that the software giants will reveal the new Tensor SoC before its typical cycle to prepare a solid foundation for its Pixel 9 lineup.

As for other specifications, Google Pixel Fold 2 prototypes are being tested with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of fast UFS 4.0 storage. By comparison, its predecessor, the Pixel Fold, packed 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Meanwhile, rumors of the Pixel 8a launch have picked up steam as the new device has been cleared by certification sites in the US, meaning an official launch isn’t far off.
