Leaked Details of Instagram’s Project 92 Revealed

A leaked screenshot of Instagram’s new rival to Twitter has surfaced, allegedly taken during a Meta preview meeting, revealing the app’s user interface. According to an internal report obtained by the Verge, the app is currently referred to as “Project 92” but may be publicly launched under the name “Threads.”

Learn more about Instagram’s Twitter alternative

The leaked screenshot reveals an Instagram-like interface, but without images. There are 5 tabs at the bottom which can include Home, Search, Create/Write, Like and Profile. Individual posts can be liked, commented on, reshared (like retweeted) and shared. In addition to this, the total number of replies and likes can also be seen. Verified profiles could also be a thing, as posts from multiple verified and unverified users can be seen in the leaked screenshot.

According to Meta’s Chief Product Officer (CPO) Chris Cox, the upcoming Twitter alternative will also utilize the ActivityPub community protocol, which will allow users to migrate their Instagram accounts and followers to the new service. According to the Verge, Meta CPO called the app “our answer to Twitter” and stated that the app’s goal was “security, ease of use, reliability.”

“We’ve heard from content creators and public figures who are interested in a sensibly managed platform that they believe they can trust and rely on for distribution,” Cox said.

When will it be available?

According to Cox, coding for the app started back in January and it will be available to the public “as soon as possible”. Several celebrities have already pledged to use the Twitter option, including DJ Slime, and the company is in talks with other celebrities such as Oprah and the Dalai Lama to join the platform when it launches.
