Google Maps directions glitch
Who would have thought that following Google Maps would lead some travelers down a dangerous road? On November 19, 2023, some drivers on the route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas took dangerous desert detours by following directions from Google Maps. Several cars were diverted onto a dangerous dirt road.
According to a report by KTLA 5, Shelby Easler, who documented the incident on TikTok, revealed that her family and several others followed an alternate route suggested by Google Maps to avoid the dust storm and save time. However, a detour led them to the remote Nevada desert and left them stranded for hours. Shelby and her family spent five hours trying to cross the area.
After the incident, Google Maps apologized. According to a Washington Post report, Google Maps responded to the incident after Easler’s video gained widespread attention. The video garnered more than a million views. A Google spokesperson apologized: “We apologize for the events of last weekend and can confirm that we will no longer direct drivers traveling between Las Vegas and Los Angeles along this narrow back road off Interstate 15 near the California-Nevada border. .” The technology giant assured that drivers making the same trip would be rerouted through the now reopened Interstate 15.
This incident shows that relying solely on GPS apps to navigate the roads can sometimes be scary and should only be attempted if you are really familiar with the road and where it ends. Otherwise, it’s better to stay on the main road.
