Meta’s Quest 3 Offers Apple’s ‘Spatial Videos’ at a Fraction of the Price of Vision Pro
Apple is officially introducing the Vision Pro in the US, marking the debut of their first new product line in nearly a decade in a matter of hours. The mixed reality “space computer” is packed with new features designed to entice potential buyers. These features include the ability to play spatial videos recorded with iPhone 15 Pro models.
However, you don’t have to pay the $3,500 price tag to enjoy these videos. There is a more budget-friendly option – just buy Meta’s competing Quest headphones.
According to Meta’s announcement, the upcoming v62 OS update will enable the Quest 3, Quest 2, and Quest Pro to play spatial videos shot on the iPhone 15 Pro. It’s worth noting that this update will be rolling out gradually over the next few weeks, so not everyone may get it at the same time.
For those unfamiliar, Apple’s spatial videos are recorded at 1080p resolution at 30 fps and can be viewed as regular 2D videos on your iPhone. However, the unique feature lies in the ability to play them with Vision Pro’s mixed reality headset in a 3D environment in a floating window. This is facilitated by using both the main camera lens and the iPhone 15 Pro’s ultra-wide-angle lens to record videos, resulting in a stereoscopic effect.
$3500 vs $500
The Apple Vision Pro headset is priced at $3,499, while Meta’s Quest 3 is a significantly more affordable $499. This represents a significant cost difference of $3,000 from comparable operations. While the Vision Pro gets excellent native reproduction thanks to its high-resolution OLED screens, the Quest 3 offers an attractive and cost-effective alternative, making the comparison interesting and enjoyable.
