Mobile World Congress 2023 Roundup: Are Foldables Finally Ready for the Main Stage?
Mobile World Congress 2023 (MWC 2023) in Barcelona has come to an end, and it’s fair to say that much of the offline event this year was about foldable devices. The first offline MWC event in a few years gave several brands the opportunity to showcase the work behind the scenes on their foldable products.
Samsung has a clear leadership position in this segment, and the company is somewhat used to the development of new products. So the entry of more brands into the fray will not only force the South Korean brand to step up, but also consider differentiating its products.
Oppo has shown its prowess in this arena with the Find N devices, and finally the company has introduced its Find N2 Flip in global markets, including India, where it will launch soon.
Xiaomi and Vivo are some of the brands that have reserved their premium foldable devices for the Chinese market, but considering the folding brands at MWC 2023 this year, it won’t be long before mainstream brands finally enter this segment.
And it’s not just about well-known brands diversifying into the foldable market. Tecno is probably a surprising addition to this fold where it will soon have a premium foldable device for consumers. OnePlus has also confirmed its ambitions in the foldable market, and we expect the likes of Realme and iQOO to enter this space as well.
We’re in the first few months of 2023, and it’s about time that foldable products got a wider reach than the people who rely on these products. MWC 2023 has given us a glimpse into the near future where existing brands will have to start innovating or else lose out to future audiences. Chinese brands in general seem to have a wider focus on these products.
Oppo recently introduced its Find N2 Flip with a crease-free design that Samsung hasn’t been able to offer. You now also design a large outdoor display for these devices and pack them with a large capacity battery that supports fast charging.
Based on the week-long event in Barcelona, it’s clear that foldables (both Cellphones and Laptops) are ready for the main stage after living in the shadows of their traditional counterparts.
