Mozilla has acquired this startup that detects fake online reviews: All the details
Mozilla has acquired Fakespot, a startup that helps users identify fake or unreliable reviews through a website and browser extension.
With Fakespot, the company said Firefox users have access to a reliable shopping tool that helps improve the online shopping experience.
Mozilla also mentioned that it will bring Fakespot functionality to Firefox over time.
“Fakespot continues to work on all major web browsers and mobile devices, and the Mozilla team is committed to improving the Fakespot experience for its many dedicated users,” Mozilla said in a blog post on Tuesday.
“There will also be Fakespot integrations unique to Firefox. The addition of Fakespot features will make Firefox customers best equipped to wade through fraudulent reviews and shop with confidence that the products they are buying are quality and authentic,” it added.
US-based Fakespot was founded in 2016 and uses artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to spot patterns and similarities between reviews to flag them as fraudulent.
Fakespot assigns a rating or rating to product reviews to help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.
The company’s website and browser extension are designed to help users quickly identify where misleading reviews may be artificially boosting a product’s search engine ranking.
In March, Mozilla unveiled a new startup called Mozilla.ai, which the company hopes will “build a trusted and independent open source artificial intelligence ecosystem.”
The company said it will initially invest $30 million to build this new startup.
