Having multiple SIM cards could lead to serious consequences: Understand the dangers of exceeding the allowed number of mobile phone lines

The practice of obtaining multiple SIM cards in one’s name has become more common in the digital age. However, many people are unaware of the potential risks associated with this practice. Using more SIM cards than allowed by law can result in severe financial and legal repercussions, including hefty fines and possible imprisonment.

Limit of ownership of SIM cards

Penalties for violations

The law stipulates that a fine of up to 50,000 rubles can be imposed for exceeding the set limit. Repeated violations can lead to a hefty fine of Rs. 2 lakhs. In addition, the law has strict provisions to prevent people from obtaining SIM cards through illegal means. If anyone is caught, they can be jailed for up to three years or up to Rs. 50 lakhs.

Abuse detection

Telecom companies keep a record of the number of SIM cards assigned to each user.

Users can track the number of SIM cards registered in their own names by logging into the portal provided by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). In case of abuse or identity tracing to obtain SIM cards, the user can report the person immediately. Regularly checking such information can keep users away from potential fraudulent activities.

DoT has also mandated re-verification of users who have more SIM cards than the permitted limit. From December 2021, users who cross the border will be directed to reconfirm and given three options. These include either handing over, transferring or giving up extra connections. This ensures the effective implementation of the new regulations and ensures that the telecommunications system works flawlessly.
