North Korean Cybercriminals Possess $47 Million in Illegally Obtained Cryptocurrency

North Korean Hackers – The Lazarus Group is said to be in possession of more than $47 million in cryptocurrencies, most of which is in Bitcoin (BTC), a new report shows.

According to data collected by Dune Analytics, a subsidiary of 21.co, the infamous hacking group has about $42.5 million in BTC, $1.9 million in Ether (ETH), $1.1 million in Binance Coin (BNB), and an additional $640,000 in wallets stable coins. Binance USD (BUSD) dominant.

The report traced 295 wallets identified by the US government as belonging to the Lazarus Group. However, the amount of crypto held by the group has dropped significantly from $86 million on September 6, shortly after the Stake.com hack involving Lazarus.

On September 4, about $40 million was stolen from cryptocasino Stake.com. Although the reported holdings are significant, researchers believe the actual number may be much higher.

According to the report, the estimate was called a “lower bound estimate” and was based on publicly available information.

“If you have identified or are aware of other exposed hacks, please contact us so that we can trace the assets of this dashboard,” the researchers said.

Meanwhile, a recent report revealed that the group has been held responsible for stealing around $240 million worth of crypto assets in the past 104 days.

According to blockchain monitoring firm Elliptic, the hacking group stole crypto assets from Atomic Wallet ($100 million), CoinsPaid ($37.3 million), Alphapo ($60 million), and Stake.com ($41 million).

The hacking group has been linked to five major crypto hacks in the past three months. The most recent according to blockchain data was global cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx, which was hacked last week for an estimated $53 million.
