Nothing Phone 2 Launch Date Announced – July 11th
Nothing is all set to unveil its second smartphone to the public after teasing it for several months. The launch event for the Nothing Phone 2 is scheduled for July 11th at 11AM Eastern, and can be viewed via a livestream on the official website. Although the preview image doesn’t reveal much, it’s worth noting that the Glyph lights on the Phone 2 are slightly different from those on the Phone 1.
The Phone 2 may be more important than its predecessor for one of the most important reasons: It’s the first Nothing phone to arrive in the US. Until now, you had to either participate in the limited beta program or take a risk to import. If you’ve made this leap, you’ve been dealing with network coverage gaps (like the lack of 5G) and not real tech support. An official US release should improve wireless support and reach a wider audience, especially if carriers sell the phone themselves.
Nowhere has founder Carl Pei described the Phone 2 as a premium device than last year’s model, which shipped with a Snapdragon 778G+ chip and other mostly mid-range specs. The company has already confirmed that it uses the slightly older (but significantly faster) Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. It also improves camera performance such as RAW HDR images and 4K video at 60 frames per second. It is not certain if there have been any updates to the cameras themselves or other key components.
Software can also play an important role. Inverse claims that No OS is “clearer” on the Phone 2, and its experience is more developed than outsourced. The phone maker reportedly has a much larger software team, which now includes several veterans from OnePlus, Pei’s former outfit.
Whether or not anything makes a significant dent in the US market is another matter. Apple and Samsung dominate the American phone world, and even household names like Google and Motorola are following suit. OnePlus has not made significant progress despite the support of Chinese tech giant Oppo. The Phone 2 doesn’t necessarily need to be a huge hit to succeed, but Nothing faces competitors with far more resources at their disposal.
