Oppo is ready to compete with Apple and Google with its own chipset in 2024
Oppo is the latest tech giant to design its own chipset that will become part of products in the coming years. New reports coming out this week suggest that Oppo will unveil its own chip in 2024. We’ve been hearing about Oppo’s chip plans for the past few years, so we’ll have to wait and see if that timeline materializes.
The development will surely come as a surprise to chip giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek, which have been regular partners of Oppo in its smartphones over the years. And the prospect of an Oppo phone with a built-in chip is likely to generate excitement in the market.
Oppo has already brought the neural processing unit (NPU) and connectivity circuit as part of the MariSilicon line, but the system-on-chip (SoC) system is a game changer for the top of the technology. Of this, the report mentions that a major chip design process has already been completed, making the 2024 timeline realistic for the company.
We’ve heard previous reports about Oppo banking on TSMC’s expertise in manufacturing its chipsets based on 4nm architecture. We still don’t know the nature of the SoC being manufactured, whether it will cater to high-end or mid-range devices. But the chipmaking node process strongly points to a flagship product using new hardware.
Using a proprietary chipset also means better software-hardware integration in devices, which has been difficult for Android phone manufacturers to achieve for years.
And Oppo’s decision to use its own hardware could be directly leveraged across its other brands, especially OnePlus, which is now part of Oppo’s device ecosystem.
Apple and Samsung have been veterans in this department with their A-series and Exynos SoCs for mobile devices. Even Google entered the fray with the Tensor chip with the Pixel 6 series in 2021.
