Preparing for Gaganyaan mission: ISRO to conduct first abort test of crew escape system at end of month

ISRO is planning to conduct an inflight abort test of the crew escape system for the Gaganyaan mission by the end of this month. The test vehicle, developed as part of India’s first human spaceflight venture, will be used to demonstrate the system’s performance under different conditions. The Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, S Unnikrishnan Nair, stated that preparations are underway and the final assembly is progressing. The test vehicle, known as TV-D1, will be the first of four abort missions for the Gaganyaan program. The success of these missions will determine the timeline for the crewed mission. Nair also mentioned that the test vehicle could potentially be used for space tourism. The Crew Module, which is part of the Gaganyaan project, is designed to provide a habitable environment for the crew and ensure their safety during re-entry and descent. The Gaganyaan mission aims to demonstrate India’s capability to send a crew to a circular orbit around the Earth and bring them back safely. The LVM3 rocket has been identified as the launch vehicle for this mission.
