Qualcomm Introduces New Chip to Compete with Apple’s M2 Processor for Macs
Qualcomm is ready to fight in the PC segment with its new Snapdragon X series chipset. Apple has turned to its M-series silicon in recent years, and the new Qualcomm chip seems aimed squarely at that market. Qualcomm claims that the new chipsets will be released in 2024 and promises to be a “tipping point for the PC industry”.
Qualcomm has bought a company founded by former Apple chip designers, which certainly adds some credibility to the company’s cause. The Snapdragon X chips are based on Qualcomm’s Oryon processor, which promises to deliver next-level performance, as Qualcomm pointed out.
The new chip brings the device’s AI technology and 5G connection to computers. Qualcomm is hoping to respond to Apple’s M-series MacBooks, which have completely replaced Intel models over the past three years. Apple has moved to second-generation Pro M series silicon, and third-generation chips are expected early next year.
The performance increases for each M-series chip have been drastic, although most feel the power is underutilized. Qualcomm has been in the PC business for years, but it still doesn’t have enough of a foothold to be confident about its chances with the Snapdragon X series.
More importantly, PCs with Snapdragon chips won’t get a wide release, limiting the company’s access and likely growth moves in countries where PCs sell and the all-time connected PC is a hit. Intel is also working behind the scenes to challenge in this space, and we should probably see a more tangible product in the next few years.
We look forward to seeing how Qualcomm overcomes the issues faced by its previous PC chips and pushes Snapdragon X as aggressively as its mobile chip business around the world.
