Reddit Introduces Chat Channels Feature; A new way to chat on Subreddits
Social discussion forum Reddit has introduced “chat channels”, a new way to chat on subreddits. With this move, the company is trying to provide community members with more ways to interact with each other.
“This month, exclusively with 25 volunteer subreddits, we’re experimenting with a new way to chat in subreddits – chat channels! Chat channels are dedicated spaces in the subreddit where you can connect, ask questions, or just hang out,” Reddit said in a blog post Thursday.
The new feature includes a dedicated channel for moderators to discuss subreddit management, and they can choose whether or not to enable this feature in the community.
In addition, the platform provides tools for moderators, such as the ability to choose who can participate in the conversation, manage the chat queue, and monitor reported messages in the conversation.
In addition, the company also announced that it will shut down “Predictions” as early as May 9.
“This means that as of May 9th, the ability to create new tournaments, participate in active tournaments, and view old tournaments will no longer be available, and historical content will be deleted,” Reddit said.
According to the company, the decision to shut down “Predictions” was made in order to simplify, navigate and participate in Reddit.
“Sunsetting Predictions allows us to focus on building products that have a broader impact on both mods and redditors,” the company said.
Earlier this week, Reddit released an update to the subreddit header, where most iOS and Android redditors will see a simplified and modernized design.
In the Subreddit Header Redesign, the header tab (“About”, “Menu”, etc.) is accessible to all users by clicking anywhere in the subreddit header, the search bar is condensed into a single button, and the spaces between posts and the header are reduced for better visibility.
“Once this update is released, we will continue to iterate on the subreddit header to make ‘About’ tabs more prominent in the future,” the company said.
