Report suggests Apple is considering AI partnerships with news publishers
According to the New York Times, Apple has initiated talks with prominent news and publishing entities in the past few weeks. The purpose of these negotiations is to obtain consent for utilizing their content in Apple’s advancement of generative artificial intelligence systems.
The iPhone maker has inked multi-year deals worth at least $50 million to license the news article archive, according to the report, citing people familiar with the discussions.
Apple’s contacts with news organizations include Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue and the New Yorker; NBC News; and IAC, which owns People, the Daily Beast and Better Homes and Gardens, the New York Times said.
According to the report, some publishers approached by Apple were lukewarm on the initial call.
Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Big tech has invested aggressively to integrate generative AI. On the other hand, Apple has used technology to improve the basic functions of its new devices.
In October, Apple also introduced new MacBook Pro and iMac computers and three new chips to power them, emphasizing that they can be used by artificial intelligence researchers whose chatbots and other creations are often limited by the amount of data that can fit in a computer’s memory.
