Sam Altman announces OpenAI’s plan to integrate “speech, images, and videos” into GPT.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has been incredibly rapid in recent years and could surpass all previous revolutions. Altman recently had a conversation with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, where they discussed various aspects of AI, including its growth, representation, ChatGPT, and the potential of GPT-5. Altman emphasized that the AI revolution will happen at an unprecedented speed, highlighting society’s quick adoption of this technology. Interestingly, Altman also revealed the potential use cases of GPT-5 and shared his most frequently used app, which surprisingly is not ChatGPT. Let’s examine these details more closely.
Sam Altman on upcoming AI milestones, GPT update and more
On the Unconfuse Me with Bill Gates podcast, OpenAI’s Sam Altman said, “Right now, GPT-4 asks most questions 10,000 times, one of those 10,000 is probably pretty good, but it doesn’t always know which one, and you’d want to ask Get the best response, 10,000 each time, and therefore increasing reliability is important.”
The CEO of OpenAI predicted that the ability to incorporate speech, images and video could become critical in the next two years. Although OpenAI already provides visual and audio features for current models, they could be improved and eventually realize a vision of the real world with more elements than just text.
Personalization and customizability are some of the key areas where GPT-4.5 or GPT-5, the next major update to Generative Pretrained Transformer, is expected to make big changes. “Being able to know about you, your email, your calendar, how you like scheduled appointments, combined with other external data sources… Those are some of the key areas for improvement,” Altman said.
Speaking about the shortcomings of its GPT-4, Altman said that it currently has limited inference capabilities. Thus, improving the inference and reasoning capabilities of GPT-4 is also one of the priorities for the near future. Its purpose is to improve the model in synthesizing data, reading and analyzing prompts, and making wise conclusions.
All of these changes are a key priority for OpenAI, which will be worked on over the next two years, Altman added.
Speaking with Sam Altman, Microsoft founder Bill Gates expressed his amazement after experiencing ChatGPT and also revealed some skepticism before he experienced it. “I was privileged to see your work as it developed, and I was very skeptical. I didn’t expect ChatGPT to be this good. It blows my mind.”
