Samsung wants Mixed Reality devices to be powered by their chipsets
Samsung is said to be designing chipsets for XR (Extended Reality) devices as the company is expected to announce new XR headsets later this year or in the first half of next year.
Citing sources from Korea Economic Daily, the company’s plans to enter the XR device chip market are now taking concrete forms.
Samsung’s System LSI division, which makes Exynos processors and ISOCELL camera sensors, has taken the first step towards making processors for the XR.
The technology giant also plans to compete with Google and Qualcomm.
In addition, according to the report, the company could design completely new chipsets or modify existing ones to fit XR devices.
The chipset is responsible for running the operating system and applications, calculating sensor data and tracking user movements.
With XR devices, rich data can be superimposed on reality and create experiences such as real-time translation, immersive meetings and mobility, according to the report.
According to Counterpoint Research, more than 110 million XR devices could be sold annually by 2025, a huge jump from the current 18 million units annually.
Another market tracker, IDC, predicts that the XR device market will reach $50.9 billion in 2025, up from $13.9 billion in 2022.
In November of last year, Meta (formerly Facebook) launched its new high-end mixed reality headset, the Meta Quest Pro.
The company has sold more than 10 million copies of its predecessor, Meta Quest, worldwide.
Apple is expected to unveil its virtual reality glasses, tentatively called Reality Pro, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 on June 5.
