Sony’s Portable Spatial Sound System Now Available
Sony has potentially revolutionized the concept of surround sound stereo systems with its HT-AX7 portable theater system, which features 360 spatial sound mapping. Unlike traditional setups that are time-consuming to assemble, this system offers detachable speakers and effortless mobility between rooms, eliminating the need for professional assistance.
The system uses the company’s patented spatial sound mapping technology to create phantom speakers in the front, back and overhead. These sound sources integrate into three detachable and fully portable speakers that enclose listeners in a “bubble-like ball” of surround sound. The system is designed so that anyone can install it, so no special installation is required.
In addition to its portable form factor, the HT-AX7 system uses a real-time algorithm to scale stereo sound to 3D surround sound. You can also turn this feature off with the garden variety “room fill sound”. All connected speakers are wireless and automatically pair with each other, making installation even easier. This is a stereo system released in 2023, so there’s also an app to adjust the sound and state field.
Like the other bells and whistles, the wireless speakers get 30 hours of use on a single charge and have quick-charge capabilities. These are Bluetooth speakers, so you’re not tied to the TV, which is traditional for home theater setups.
Sony’s HT-AX7 home theater system costs $500 and is available for pre-order right now. Delivery of the units will start on July 18. The price is quite reasonable if you are looking to build a budget-friendly home theater system.
