The split keyboard is now coming to Android tablets with this version
Android tablets are still some way from becoming ideal iPad competitors, but Google seems to be moving in the right direction, as support for the split keyboard is now coming to tablets as well. Google is definitely focused on tablets, as illustrated by the launch of the Pixel Tablet earlier this month and also the Pixel foldable to keep things interesting for consumers.
Foldables have already received support, and now tablets will also get their share. Google has mentioned that Android 12L is built for such devices, and future versions of Android promise to focus on these large-scale form factors.
Bringing a split keyboard shows that company means business. But does the feature work to improve Android tablets? It works the same as the folding version and is not enabled by default.
You need to go to your device’s keyboard settings and select the shared keyboard layout to try using it on the desktop. You may notice that some keys are on both screens as the spacing has been stretched to fit the tablet’s aspect ratio.
Features like these help Android mature for tablets, but it’s funny to say that more than ten years after the first Android-powered tablet was released. It’s no wonder that Apple has a clear lead in this segment.
Make no mistake, Android tablet performance is not an issue, you go through any tablet review and most of them will talk about inefficient software that plagues the growth and development of Android tablets. It looks like Google is finally ready to take Android seriously for tablets, and we hope that the results will be seen in a good light in the near future.
