Spotify to Offer Sleep, Meditation and Relaxation Content from Calm
Calm, the well-known meditation app, is joining forces with Spotify to provide its content through the streaming service, aiming to capture a portion of the time you spend listening to music and podcasts. As part of Spotify Open Access, an initiative introduced in 2021, select Calm meditations will be accessible on Spotify without the need for an extra app. This collaboration allows companies to offer their paid content on Spotify across various subscriber levels.
In this case, Calm offers a sampling of its various offerings of Sleep Stories that can help you drop into an entire section tailored for anyone who has never meditated before. Another, Calm for Beginners, offers the company’s most popular introductory meditation and gives you a few five-minute-or-less options to test the waters. You can use Sleep Stories through Calm for Sleep (with stories from Harry Styles and other celebrities) and try Calm for Stress & Anxiety when you need to unwind during difficult times. If you want to learn how singer Camila Cabello got into mindfulness, there is an option for that too.
Spotify also hosts a Calm for Kids program, so you can see if your child is focusing on a meditation tailored to their age group. It also has a few children’s bedtime stories told by the likes of Jennifer Garner and Wanda Sykes. Existing Calm users can also benefit from the partnership, as additional content is available on Spotify.
Calm claims to be the number one meditation app – as of October 2022 it claimed to have over 100 million downloads and over four million paying subscribers. But with several competitors like Headspace and InsightTimer, partnerships like this one can expand their reach.
Enjoying the content available may not be the only reason why Calm is seeing more subscribers. While some of the content is free for Spotify users, others require you to start a free trial of Calm or purchase a subscription. Trials last for seven days, and Calm Premium membership costs $69.99 per year or $14.99 per month.
