Tata Group Doubles Up: iPhone Casing Capacity at Hosur Plant Soars to Meet Demand!
The Tata Group is making efforts to expand its iPhone-casing unit in Hosur, with plans to double the size of the current plant. The existing unit in Hosur, which was set up with a Rs. 5,000 crore investment and covers an area of 500 acres, currently has a workforce of over 15,000 employees. With the expansion, it is anticipated that the workforce will significantly increase to around 25,000 to 28,000 individuals.
Strategic partnership with Apple
Apple chose Tata Electronics as its supplier for the production of iPhone cases as a strategic step to diversify its production outside of China. The Economic Times reports that Tata Electronics is set to significantly enhance its capability in contract manufacturing of high-end electronic products and accessories. The company recently acquired Wistron’s iPhone assembly plant.
A source cited by the publication stated, “The new facility could be entirely dedicated to Apple’s phone components, but the possibility of manufacturing components for other flagship phones from different companies cannot be ruled out.”
According to a government official, the new facility may focus exclusively on Apple phone components, but it is possible to use the factory to manufacture components for other top phones from different companies.
Tata Electronics began scouting for additional land near its existing electronics plant in Hosur in May this year. An industry insider has confirmed the establishment of a major phone component manufacturing plant in Hosur.
During an earnings call earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed enthusiasm for India as a market and noted the company’s all-time revenue record for the June-September period. Cook emphasized India’s potential, stating, “We’re seeing an exceptional market – a lot of people moving into the middle class.”
Record sales in India
Counterpoint’s recent report highlighted the significant growth of Apple’s sales in the June-September quarter in India, registering a 34 percent year-on-year growth. According to Counterpoint research analyst Shubham Singh, this period was the best quarter for Apple’s shipments in the country, crossing 2.5 million units.
