Threads introduces Trending Topics feature, making popular discussions easily accessible
Meta’s text-based social media app, Threads, is enhancing its capabilities by adding a new feature that mirrors the trending topics section found on X (formerly Twitter). As of March 19, users in the US can now view trending topics within the Threads app, positioning it as a competitor to X and Bluesky Social in the microblogging platform market.
Trending Topics feature in Threads
Users can now explore trending topics in the “Trending Now” section of the Threads app, accessible from both the Search tab and the For You page. While the feature is currently limited to displaying five trending topics, it will provide users with a more dynamic and real-time browsing experience, reports androidcentral.
Limited but promising
While Threads’ Trending Topics feature is still in its early stages and lacks X’s categorization, it’s a step forward for content discovery within the app. Mark Zuckerberg described Trending Now as a way to keep up with popular conversations on Threads.
Meta began testing the Trending Now section over a month ago, initially with a small group of US users. Now widely available across the country, Meta has yet to announce plans to expand the feature to more regions and languages.
Threads originally launched last year as a basic text-based social media platform to attract users migrating from X. With features like hashtags and now-trending topics, Meta aims to improve Threads’ functionality and appeal to a wider audience.
Close the gap with X
By featuring trending topics, Threads hopes to be a more trusted source for following news and trending conversations, a domain where X still dominates. While Threads is making progress, it remains to be seen how users will react to this latest addition.
For users in the US, Threads’ Trending Topics feature is now available, offering an enhanced browsing experience and deeper engagement with trending conversations.
