Tinder introduces AI technology to assist users in selecting optimal profile photos
Tinder has introduced a new tool called Photo Selector that uses AI technology to assist users in selecting images for their dating profiles. By utilizing facial recognition technology, users are prompted to take a selfie, enabling the app to access photos stored on their phone. The AI then recommends up to 27 photos aimed at creating a positive initial impression.
User demand for AI Photo Selector
According to Tinder, there is considerable demand for this feature. According to a survey conducted by a dating app, 68% of users believe that an AI-powered photo selector would be useful. In addition, 52% of users reported difficulties in selecting profile pictures. Tinder aims to address these challenges with the Photo Selector by excluding photos with multiple faces that violate its guidelines, such as photos containing nudity or drugs. The tool also curates a diverse selection of photos based on factors like lighting and composition that are known to work well on the platform.
The role of artificial intelligence in improving the user experience
Tinder incorporating artificial intelligence into its user experience is not new. The app introduced the “Are you sure?” feature in 2021 that detects potentially harmful or inappropriate language when messages are opened and prompts users to reconsider before sending. Also, “Does this annoy you?” the tool detects potentially offensive language in messages and asks recipients if they want to report it.
AI features in many dating apps
Tinder isn’t alone in using AI to improve its platform. Another popular dating app, Bumble, developed a Private Detector tool that uses artificial intelligence to identify and blur nude photos. Earlier this year, Bumble founder and former CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd discussed the potential of an AI concierge to coach users in better communication skills. He even envisions a future where AI concierges could interact with each other to find matches for users, eliminating the need for humans to converse with numerous potential matches.
The introduction of AI-based tools in dating apps comes at a time when many users are expressing frustration with online dating. A 2023 study by the Pew Research Center revealed that 46 percent of Americans have had some or very negative experiences with online dating. These AI innovations aim to address such concerns by improving user experiences and making the dating process more efficient and enjoyable.
