Twitter bans record 6.8 lakh accounts in India amid major overhaul
Struggling to become profitable under Elon Musk’s leadership, Twitter has banned a record 682,420 accounts promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity in India between January 26 and February 25.
The microblogging platform, which is going through a storm under Musk, also suspended 1,548 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.
In its monthly report under the new IT rules 2021, Twitter said it received only 73 complaints from users in India during the same period through its complaint handling mechanisms.
In addition, Twitter handled 27 complaints complaining about account suspensions.
“We reversed 10 of these account freezes after reviewing the details of the situation. The rest of the reported accounts remain frozen,” the company said.
“We also received 24 requests related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period,” it added.
Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users must publish monthly compliance reports.
The report came as Twitter was set to remove all old verified blue badges from April 1, and users will have to pay either Rs 900 per month or Rs 9,400 per year to carry the Blue Badge with verification. ability to edit tweets and send longer text/videos.
