Twitter Moves to X.com, iPhone Users Notice URL Changes

Twitter recently underwent a major rebranding effort, changing its name and logo to X. The company updated the logos on its website, apps, and even its headquarters. Additionally, associated products like Twitter Blue subscription and TweetDeck were renamed to X Blue subscription and XPro, respectively. However, it seems that the transition is not fully complete yet. Reports indicate that some users have noticed that URLs generated from the share sheet of the X app on iOS now begin with X.com instead of the familiar twitter.com. So far, this change has only been observed in the iPhone OS, while web links and the Android app still display the usual domain. However, this could potentially change in the near future.

The report comes from The Verge’s Jay Peters, who said: “When I copy post URLs from the Sharesheet in the X iOS app, they appear on my clipboard as x.com links, not twitter.com links”. Interestingly, previously X owner Elon Musk had explained that X.com will redirect to Twitter. But at that time there was no mention of changing the domain name.

X.com to replace Twitter domain?

The move seems logical given that the company is replacing traces of the word Twitter from company documents entirely. In April, Musk registered Twitter as X.corp, which is seen as the first step toward changing the platform.

We tried testing both on Android and on the web if changing the twitter.com part of the URL from any profile or post would take us back to the original source and still stick with x.com. Although we still got to our destination, the URL always changed to Twitter. So this change may be either a limited test or just the first step in moving to x.com, but the change is likely to come to the website and Android apps soon as well.

Musk, along with CEO Linda Yaccarino, is trying to make X an all-in-one app similar to WeChat in China. It’s an app that includes social media, videos, shopping, payments, and more in one interface, and users never have to leave it. The new brand identity could be related to the creation of that separate platform.
