Twitter Reportedly Resumes Payment of Google Cloud Bill
Bloomberg reports that Twitter has restarted its payment for the Google Cloud contract. As previously reported by Platformer on June 10th, Twitter had been withholding payment for cloud services ahead of the contract’s renewal date on June 30th. The risk of losing access to Google’s infrastructure prompted Twitter to quickly move its services off of Google’s servers, but this process was reportedly delayed, leaving some of the company’s in-house tools at risk of going offline by the end of the month.
Now it seems that Twitter has found a way to avoid this scenario. Bloomberg reports that Linda Yaccarino, the company’s newly appointed CEO, “helped get the relationship back on track.” In fact, the two companies are reportedly in talks about a broader partnership that could include advertising and access to Google’s Twitter paid API. Twitter’s Google Cloud deal dates back to 2018. According to Bloomberg, the deal has cost the company $200-300 million a year and was one of the early targets of Elon Musk’s cost-cutting. Google reportedly had “difficulty” contacting the billionaire to discuss Twitter’s unpaid bills, and at one point tried to reach him through SpaceX, which also does business with the tech giant.
