Twitter Sees Decrease in Weekly Active Users After Elon Musk Renaming
Elon Musk renamed Twitter X, and its weekly active users dropped 4 percent in the weeks following the exercise.
The X app fell four places in the overall rankings to No. 36 earlier this month after its installs fell 8 percent, according to data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower. That included a decline in both iOS and Android, down 22 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
Average user time and sessions on X decreased by 5 percent after rebranding.
“Twitter rebranded to X earlier this week and saw mixed reactions from its users, some of whom expressed particular displeasure at the abandonment of the classic blue bird logo,” the report said.
However, installs of the Twitter Lite app, designed for emerging markets, increased after the name change, TechCrunch reported, citing the data.
Twitter Lite downloads increased by 50 percent from the previous period.
Between August 6 and August 20, turnover also increased significantly, by 25 percent, mainly due to iOS revenue (24 percent). The X rebrand also affected other apps such as competitors Bluesky, Instagram Threads and Mastodon.
In the first week of the rebrand (July 23 to August 5), Meta’s Threads saw a 70 percent drop in downloads, leaving the app ranked 16th overall. But downloads for Bluesky and Mastodon grew by 180 percent and 15 percent, respectively, according to data from Sensor Tower.
