Unlock the Secrets to Safer Content with Bluesky’s New Tools!
Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform and competitor of X (previously known as Twitter), has recently implemented additional safety measures to enhance content moderation. Additionally, it has incorporated new functionalities that allow users to control the visibility of their posts and manage interactions. These tools were introduced in response to criticism faced by Bluesky for its failure to ban a user who issued death threats and members who used racial slurs in their usernames. Notably, the platform remains in private beta testing and is not yet available to the general public.
According to a TechCrunch report, Bluesky has implemented these as “more advanced automated tools” that flag any content that violates its community guidelines. However, these are not automatically removed or the poster is not banned. The platform’s content control team will review this flagged content and only then will a decision be made.
The company said in a post: “We’re repeating this so that mods can check for offensive content, spam, etc. without any user seeing it first.”
Bluesky gets new security tools
These security tools are not available to users and are part of the console tools used by social media administrators to manage the platform. It’s not clear what the moderation process was before, but it appears the platform had no mechanism to review harmful or offensive content.
Users also get a couple of new features in keeping with the same theme. The first feature allows them to report mislabeled content in their own posts so that the moderation team can fix the incorrect tags. This information is available directly on the writing screen of the platform. In the past, they were dependent on other users reporting it on their behalf.
Another feature is the addition of user lists and watch lists. Watchlists are useful for muting or blocking multiple users at the same time if they don’t want to interact with them or are being harassed by a large group. These settings are also synced across all the devices they use Bluesky on.
