How to use this tool to check if a Twitter account is fake or impersonated
On Thursday, Twitter began removing the blue checkmarks that identified verified users of the platform, including journalists and public figures.
The checks, which previously meant identifying an account through Twitter, were removed from accounts that didn’t pay a monthly fee to keep them. About 300,000 users were initially verified with the old system, which started disappearing from their profiles.
As Twitter continues to deal with issues related to fake accounts and impersonation, it can be difficult for users to verify the authenticity of an account. However, a tool has been created to help users check if a Twitter account is fake or impersonating.
A tool available at checkblue.org allows users to search for a Twitter username or attach it to a URL.
How does this work?
The tool compares public records compiled by a UW-Madison graduate student in November 2022 before verified check mark removals or wording changes under the new administration.

It is important to note that the tool may return an incorrect result if the account was renamed after the data was retrieved. However, the old username still works to get the actual result.
While the tool isn’t perfect, it serves as a resource to fill the gap and alleviate concerns that some of Twitter’s user base has expressed during this transition and redefinition. The site is provided as is and is not intended to offend anyone.
Users can use this tool to check if the account is verified from November 2022. Although the tool is currently Twitter-centric, the tool may be expanded to other social networks in the future.
