12,000 Indian Government Websites Targeted by Hackers From Indonesia: Report
In its latest warning message, the Indian government has been warned about the risk to about 12,000 government websites targeted by an Indonesian hacker group. Details of this government memo are quoted in the MoneyControl report, which adds that government officials have been told to protect themselves against any potential intrusions they detect.
The alert comes from India’s Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C), a security agency of the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to the report, I4C has warned that a group of hackers had targeted key departments of the government through denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
The purpose of these forms of attack is to cripple systems by pushing data from multiple systems. A bigger concern for I4C comes from the list of government websites allegedly targeted by hackers, which includes both state and central government websites.
The warning itself sounds serious, and the warning to government employees includes general cyber hygiene tips such as; If you don’t want to click or open emails from unknown senders, make sure all management systems are up to date with their software versions. The existence of robust cyber security has become essential not only for companies but also for large administrative bodies.
Cyber warfare is a major threat, and the lack of geographic boundaries for these attacks means that a hacker can sit in one corner of the world and penetrate compromised systems to steal confidential information that can be dangerous for everyone involved.
Not so long ago, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) systems were breached in what was later confirmed as a massive ransomware attack. The hospital’s database was unavailable for a few days, putting AIIMS patients and the healthcare system at risk. These incidents are a clear sign that the infrastructure needs immediate attention, and I4C is critical in tightening loopholes to avoid such mishaps from now on.
