Tips for Taking Photos with the iPhone 15 Pro
When Apple announced the iPhone 15 Pro during its Wonderlust event, one of the camera’s highlighted features was the ability to shoot in ProRes LOG mode at 4K60P. This feature is available from launch and users can use it to record flat, LOG video that can be adjusted during post-production.
There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind before you can start shooting in LOG. First, you must have an external SSD to shoot in ProRes 4K60P mode. However, you can still shoot ProRes LOG at 4K30P without an SSD, but considering the file sizes, it would be ideal to record directly to the SSD. Second, you need to follow a few steps from the camera settings to enable LOG recording.
Here, let’s see how to shoot LOG video on iPhone 15 Pro/iPhone 15 Pro Max and how to enable this setting:
- First, go to Settings > Camera. Now find “Shapes” and open it.
- Next, find the “Apple ProRes” switch and turn it on. When you turn it on, you will see the coding subsection. Under “Encoding” select the “LOG” option.
- That’s it. You’ve enabled LOG recording, but you still need to manually enable it in the Camera app every time you want to record to LOG.

But if you want to shoot in 4K60P ProRes LOG mode, you need to connect the SSD with a supported cable. Ideally, the cable that came with the SSD should work. In our case, the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with the Samsung T7 Shield works fine. Using other cables may also work, but may result in choppy looking video.
You can easily transfer the footage to your computer and grade it to create the creative look you want. You can also use LUTs in your LOG footage for ease of use and as a solid starting point that you can modify to suit your needs.
Apple now also offers the ability to import LOG video into its Photos app if you’ve saved the video directly to the SSD, so you can share it right away.
