Acer suffers from a huge data breach, 160 GB of data is sold
Acer is the latest company to face a massive data breach. 160GB of data was exposed and put up for sale to the highest bidder. Acer has confirmed the incident, claiming that hackers were able to break into a server that hosts documents used by the company’s technicians.
Acer assures people that it does not believe that hackers have accessed millions of consumer records from a vast repository of stolen data.
While the company did not provide details on the amount of data breached, a new post was spotted on a popular hacking forum in which a hacker offers 160GB of data stolen from Acer last month. The hacker claims that the information stolen from Acer includes technical manuals, software tools, and product documentation for phones, tablets, and laptops. ISO files and more.
Acer has confirmed that it is still investigating the matter, but has seen no evidence of customer data stored on the hacked server. “We recently discovered an incident involving unauthorized access by a repair technician to one of our document servers. While our investigation is ongoing, there is currently no indication that any consumer data is stored on that server,” BleepingComputer quoted Acer as saying in this report.
Acer hasn’t given any specifics to its customers, but data breaches usually have some kind of impact on the people using their products.
Technicians usually keep records of all repairs performed and even have some information about the consumer. So it is possible that hackers try to phish victims using their email IDs or worse mobile numbers. So we recommend that all Acer users are aware of such possibilities and do not open links from unknown email IDs and messages.
