Google will promote fewer employees to senior roles in 2023: Report

Tech giant Google has informed its employees via email that fewer of them will be promoted to a higher level this year compared to last year.

“The process is executive-led and will be much the same as last year — although due to the slower pace of hiring, we plan to make fewer promotions to L6 and above than when Google was growing rapidly,” the tech giant said in an email. it was viewed by CNBC.

The L6 division refers to the first layer of the workforce, which is considered senior and usually consists of people with around ten years of experience.

The tech giant said it was promoting fewer people to senior roles “to ensure that the number of Googlers in senior and leadership positions grows in proportion to the company’s growth.”

“If your manager believes you are ready for promotion, he will nominate you,” it added.

The company said in an email that employees in technical roles who want to “nominate themselves” have a “short window” from March 6 to March 8 to do so.

The changes come as the company is rolling out a new performance evaluation system called Google Reviews and Development (GRAD), which will result in more employees receiving poor ratings and fewer receiving high ratings, according to the report.

In a January 20 letter to employees, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that about 12,000 people will be laid off worldwide, which is more than 6 percent of the entire workforce.
