WhatsApp improves user engagement by allowing sharing of channel posts through status updates.
WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, has recently enhanced its Channels feature by allowing users to share channel posts through status updates. This update comes after the introduction of four other channel-related features last month, some of which were tested in beta versions.
User-friendly access to different platforms
Recent tests show that sharing channel updates as a status is now available on both Android and iOS versions of WhatsApp. While the feature may have been available for a few days, the official announcement was made on the channel page only a couple of days ago. It’s important to note that while users have long been able to share channel messages in individual or group chats, this change focuses on sharing within status updates, Android Police reports.
WhatsApp’s FAQ page guides users on how to send a channel update to their Status page for Android, iOS and Web/Desktop apps. On Android, users can achieve this by long-pressing the desired message, tapping the right-pointing arrow in the top-right corner of the screen, and moving on to the Status screen, which displays prominently alongside people you’ve frequently connected with and recent conversations.
WhatsApp web integration and possible improvements
This new functionality allows users to share channel messages on their status page simultaneously with individual contacts or groups. Although the FAQ page suggests that this feature will be included in WhatsApp Web, according to current observations, it is not yet available. Currently, users can only share channel messages with groups or contacts in the stable version of WhatsApp Web, and any changes are expected.
The introduction of features like channels is central to WhatsApp’s growth as it seeks to compete with rival messaging apps. Since its acquisition by Meta/Facebook in 2014, WhatsApp has evolved significantly, defying early predictions of its demise. While alternative services such as Telegram pioneered features such as Channels in September 2015, WhatsApp continues to adapt and improve functionality based on changing user preferences and technological advancements.
