Apple dominates AI industry, acquiring over 30 startups in 2023, surpassing competitors

Apple has traditionally kept its plans and new innovations under wraps, including its developments in artificial intelligence (AI). However, it appears that Apple was caught off guard when other major tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, and even OpenAI took the lead in AI advancements over the past year. Now, Apple is not only aiming to catch up but also surpass its competitors, and to achieve this, it has embarked on an aggressive acquisition spree to ensure its dominance in this new technology. While Apple continues to work on its AI initiatives internally, reports suggest that the company has acquired over 30 AI startups last year, a surprisingly higher number compared to other tech giants’ investments.

Over the past year, Apple built its foundation with AI technology and enabled its innovations and devices for future releases in many ways, but it has had a slow start and is now expected to make a phenomenal recovery. Additionally, the company was previously rumored to be developing its own GPT, or conversational artificial intelligence, for its devices, which also showcases its efforts to bring the technology to market. So what has Apple done on the AI battlefield? Find out what a recent Statista study revealed about Apple’s AI plans.

Apple’s AI war

A new study revealed that Apple will have acquired more than 30 new AI startups in 2023. The data revealed Statista. The number is higher than any tech giant investing in new AI companies. According to the report, Apple will acquire up to 32 AI startups by 2023, the most among the tech giants. In total acquisition of artificial intelligence, Google is behind Apple with 21, Metalla with 18 and behind Microsoft with 17.” It was noted that Apple has focused on developing its own artificial intelligence innovations and technology for its devices. Apple also hired personnel from startups to improve its artificial intelligence capabilities.

9To5Mac reports that most of these AI startups are in the early stages of development, and that Apple recognizes the potential of these startups early on. This strategy also works for the company in buying “emerging AI trends and technologies” before they are released for public use. Please note that the data collected by Statista is based on an estimate, as Tim Cook revealed that they buy companies every 3-4 weeks and that it has been at a rapid pace in recent years. Apple also does not want to share the purpose and plan for its investments in building startups.

Now in 2024, Apple is expected to make major AI announcements, including integrating the technology into its upcoming iPhone 16 models.
