WhatsApp aims to facilitate cross-app messaging with Signal and Telegram, breaking down barriers.
WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, is planning to enhance user experience by introducing a new feature that will enable users to send messages to third-party apps like Signal and Telegram. The highly anticipated update, known as version 2.24.6.2, was announced by WABetaInfo.
Connection between applications
This innovative move by WhatsApp is in line with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and emphasizes chat interoperability to promote seamless communication across platforms. In response to the DMA, WhatsApp had earlier announced the beta testing of the chat compatibility feature in Android version 2.24.5.18. The latest investigation of the Google Play Store 2.24.5.20 beta update shows that third-party chats are actively developing their own chat information box.
The chat information screen that WABetaInfo shares in the screenshot provides important information. Recognizing the absence of profile names and images in third-party chats, WhatsApp plans to display a default profile picture along with the name of the third-party app linked to the chat. Users can flexibly control which apps can communicate with their WhatsApp account, ensuring a personalized user experience.
However, certain restrictions apply to third-party chats on WhatsApp. In particular, group chats involving third-party applications and calls through these applications are not supported. Communication with third-party chats may initially be limited to text messages, and future updates may include extensions. Importantly, users have the option to manually activate the Interoperability Service, making it an optional feature.
Along with this development, WhatsApp is also developing a new privacy feature aimed at preventing users from taking screenshots of other people’s profile pictures. The beta version available from the Google Play Store has a notification that appears when you try to take a screenshot, referring to “Unable to take screenshot due to application restrictions”. While this privacy feature is currently limited to select beta testers, it’s expected to roll out to all users in the coming weeks.
