An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM that can be programmed remotely, and bad actors use this ability to bypass the physical card and access it using the eSIM.
As we all know mobile numbers can be used to get all kinds of information and these hackers are now using this trick to make it easier to control other phones.
The report also quoted Russian cyber security company F.A.C.C.T., which has spoken about the latest eSIM security issue and that the fact that eSIMs can be activated with a QR code makes them easy prey.
You may feel that the phone companies have a robust mechanism to avoid falling for this scam, but these hackers are aware that with the owner’s basic information, they can clear the authentication steps and get the phone companies to create an account for their needs.
So what happens when these bad actors gain access to a phone number? The company says it tries to steal money from bank accounts and even retrieve personal information through messaging apps. eSIM has largely been a secondary option for most people, but Apple only has an eSIM iPhone model available in certain countries that should be aware of this scam and have been advised to secure their data.
People need to activate two-factor authentication on their accounts or even consider protecting these accounts with authentication apps.
