600 circles in India now have 5G services in less than 200 per day, says Union Minister Devusinh Chauhan
India has covered 600 areas with 5G services in less than 200 days, one of the fastest in the world, Union Communications Minister Devusinh Chauhan said on Monday.
Addressing the second meeting of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) here, he said that the central government’s public policies have essentially been inspired by the ‘Antyodaya’ vision and have been important for inclusive prosperity and development.
“India has covered 600 districts with 5G in less than 200 days, one of the fastest in the world,” he said in an official statement.
“India has the second largest telecommunications network with the world’s lowest data transfer speed, and the development of domestic 4G, 5G technologies in a short time has surprised the world.” Union MoS for Social Justice and Empowerment Narayanaswamy laid emphasis on ‘Digital Antyodaya’ approach and Accessible India campaign which aims to achieve universal accessibility for differently abled persons in the country.
In the inaugural session of the second DEWG meeting, MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and IT) Secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma welcomed representatives from G20 members, invited countries, international organizations, senior officials from MeitY, DoT (Department of Telecom), State Govt., among other things, and presented the progress of the three-day event.
K Rajaraman, Secretary, Telecom highlighted the critical impact of connectivity on GDP and digital economy.
As part of side events, DoT organized three thematic sessions.
The first thematic session “High Speed Mobile Broadband and its implications” consisted of panelists such as Y.G.S.C. Kishore Babu, DDG-DoT-GoI (Moderator), Sithuraj Ponraj, Director (International Affairs), Govt. From Singapore, Arun Sharma, Senior Digital Specialist, World Bank, Rahul Shah, Director, APAC, GSMA, Abhishek Singh, CEO, NeGD, MeitY.
The panel discussed last-mile high-speed connectivity, digital services in social areas (such as education, health, agriculture, etc.), impact and enhancing innovation through AI, IoT, Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0.
The release also reported on additional measures to fill in the gaps in mobile internet, smartphone availability, and help for pensioners and rural people.
Another thematic session was held on “Digital Inclusion – Connecting the Unconnected”.
The panel emphasized on connecting all the people of the planet in the digital transformation, it added.
The third and last thematic session of the day was called “Sustainable green digital infrastructure: challenges and opportunities”.
The panel discussed at length “digital infrastructure to green and its intersection with the physical infrastructure of other sectors”, sustainable development goals, carbon footprint reduction, renewable energy and renovation/recycling and effective digital transformation.
