NASA to Investigate Asteroid 16 Psyche to Uncover Clues About Earth’s Origins
NASA has an upcoming mission to investigate an extraordinary asteroid known as 16 Psyche. This peculiar space rock, resembling a golf ball in shape, can be found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, positioned more than 376 million kilometers away from the Sun.
What makes 16 Psyche so special is that it is not your average asteroid. It is full of precious metals such as iron, nickel and even gold. In fact, scientists believe this space rock is worth an astounding $10,000 quadrillion! It is far more valuable than everything on earth combined. If we could somehow bring all the metal back, every person on Earth could become a billionaire!
Why is NASA interested in 16 Psyche
But NASA is not interested in mining gold from this asteroid. They have a different, exciting purpose for the Psyche mission. Scientists suspect that 16 Psyche may be the bare metal core of a planet that lost its outer layer long ago in violent collisions in the early days of the solar system.
16 Studying Psyche up close could give us new insights into the interior of our own planet and the history of the solar system. We cannot directly see or measure the Earth’s core, so this asteroid offers a unique opportunity for scientific discovery.
Originally, NASA planned to launch the Psyche mission in August 2022. Unfortunately, it had to be delayed due to problems at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. But now the issues have been resolved and the mission is scheduled to depart from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA on 5-25. October
The trip to Psyche will take a few years, and the spacecraft will reach the asteroid in August 2029. It will orbit the asteroid for about 26 months, exploring and collecting data.
This mission is particularly exciting for NASA because it is the first time they have visited a world that is so rich in metal. Before this, they have explored rocky and icy terrain on other planets and moons.
So get ready to learn more about our solar system’s past and the precious asteroid 16 Psyche. NASA’s trip to this metal-rich world will be an extraordinary adventure!
