Android Could Soon Introduce Battery Health Feature Similar to iPhone
All smartphones have lithium-ion batteries that provide power, and due to their chemical nature, they can lose their ability to hold a charge over time. So while your phone battery is inevitable, there are ways you can help slow down the process, increasing the amount of time you can comfortably use your device.
Apple’s iPhones tell you exactly how much your battery is depleted to solve this problem, and now it looks like Android could copy this feature from iOS and bring it to the Pixel and other Android smartphones. This is because so far there have only been third-party apps that can suggest the same, but they are also not accurate. Some OEMs, including OnePlus, already offer this functionality.
As reported by Android Authority, Android phones could soon collect data about their batteries and share it with the operating system to allow users to monitor battery health. The initial work in this direction was done with Android 14, but according to the report, this may finally come true with the release of Android 15.
This development comes after Google released the December 2023 feature drop update for its Pixel smartphones. In particular, this update brought a new battery information page that allows users to measure the number of battery cycles and the date of manufacture of the battery.
Additionally, the report adds that these aren’t the only metrics that Android 14 fetches and sends to apps; Other information including date of first use, charging status and battery health are also shared. So if the battery health feature comes with Android, it would mean that most Android users would be able to see the exact state of their battery and even calculate how much of their original capacity they currently have left.
Mishaal Rahman, who spotted this development, points out that this is not yet available in the Android Settings app, but this may soon change with an update to the Settings app.
