Beware! There is a new WhatsApp calling scam that demands your attention
WhatsApp has become a hub for spam and marketing messages, which is the exact reason why millions of people switched to the messaging app from traditional text messages. But the sophistication of WhatsApp scams is evolving.
Now you don’t have to worry about nagging advertising messages from brands (who are not allowed to message you on WhatsApp), there have been regular cases of people receiving WhatsApp calls (both voice and video calls) from random international calls. numbers which, according to the given ISD codes, originate from Malaysia, Kenya and Vietnam.
Most people are clearly confused when they see the calls from these countries and they are also worried about how these scammers got their numbers. As you may know, WhatsApp works over a VoIP network, so these people can call from any country without extra charges. These cases are not isolated at all, and a search through social media shows that many people are facing this problem.
We have also received calls on WhatsApp with the codes +60 (Malaysia), +254 (Kenya) and +84 (Vietnam). Others have reported calls to +62 (Indonesia) and +223 (Mali), among others.
No one knows the agenda and the caller of these calls, but in most cases, when you get a call from a random number, they are probably trying to trick you into revealing confidential information that can help their purpose of stealing money from your account or others.
Even if you receive calls from international numbers, it does not mean that the call originates from that country. Today, you have agencies that sell international numbers for WhatsApp calls in the same city as you.
WhatsApp offers encryption for calls and messages, making it difficult to trace a person, and it seems that hackers are using this as a loophole to trick users. All we can say is that if you get a call on WhatsApp from any of the above ISD codes, we strongly recommend you not to pick the call and also block the number so that they can’t try to call you again.
