CEO Mark Zuckerberg Announces 5 Million Sign Ups For Meta’s Threads In First Four Hours
According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Threads, Meta’s latest social media platform, garnered an impressive five million sign-ups within a mere four hours of its launch. Threads is specifically designed for sharing text updates and participating in public discussions.
“Just had 5 million signups in the first four hours…” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. The Threads app is free and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Created by the Instagram team, Threads allows you to share short messages or updates of up to 500 characters. You can add links, photos or videos up to 5 minutes long. Like Instagram, Threads allows users to follow and connect with friends and creators who share their interests, including people they follow on Instagram.
Meta says that users under the age of 16 (or under 18 in some countries) are assigned a private profile by default when they join the app. They can also specify who can mention or reply to them in threads. They can also unfollow, block, limit or report a profile on Threads by tapping the three-dot menu, and any account they’ve blocked on Instagram will automatically be blocked on Threads.
Users get a Twitter-like microblogging experience, suggesting that Meta Platforms is poised to directly challenge Elon Musk’s platform. There are buttons to like, repost, reply to, or quote a “thread” and counters to show the number of likes and replies a post has received.
“Like all of our products, we take security seriously and follow Instagram’s community guidelines for app content and interactions. Since 2016, we’ve invested more than $16 billion in building the teams and technologies needed to protect our users, and we remain focused on advancing our industry-leading integrity efforts and investments to protect our community,” Meta said in a statement.
