ChatGPT Launches Android App at End of July
After launching the ChatGPT app for iPhone in May, OpenAI assured Android users that their version would be coming soon. Now, the company has revealed that ChatGPT for Android will be released to users at some point next week. Additionally, the app is already listed on Google Play, allowing users to pre-register and receive it as soon as it is released.
It’s unclear if the app will initially be available only in the US like the iPhone app, but I was able to pre-order it in Asia. OpenAI expanded the iOS app to more regions just a few days after its release, so the Android app will likely be available in other countries soon, even if it only releases in the US.
People can already access ChatGPT on Android through a browser, but while the interface isn’t difficult to navigate, it’s not ideal for mobile devices. Own application means a user interface optimized for mobile use and features tailored to platform users. For example, iOS users got support for Siri and shortcuts in June. They can create a ChatGPT prompt in Shortcuts and save it as a link to send to friends, and they can ask Siri to launch the app or create those shortcuts, among other things.
OpenAI has recently started testing a new opt-in feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers that gives the AI chatbot persistent memory. With the feature on, the chatbot remembers who the user is in conversations, which the company says can streamline queries. The feature is designed to work across the entire platform, meaning that paying Android users who opt for it will likely see persistent memory in their app when it goes live.
