Facebook loses young users in South Korea, monthly active users fall below 10 million
The number of Facebook users in South Korea fell to a record low last month as a growing number of young people opted to use Instagram and other social media platforms, industry data showed.
Facebook had a total of 9.79 million South Korean monthly active users (MAUs) on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store last month, down 2.6 percent from a month ago, according to Mobile Index data.
This is the first time that Facebook’s MAU in South Korea fell below the 10 million threshold since the Mobile Index began collecting related data in 2020, reported Yonhap news agency.
Its monthly figure has been steadily declining since August 2021, when it reached 13.41 million.
According to insiders, the decline was due to the younger generation preferring to use other social media that are more compatible with short content, such as Instagram, instead of Facebook’s traditional, text-rich features.
According to Mobile Index, Instagram’s MAUs last month in South Korea were 18.52 million, up 7 percent from a year earlier.
According to a separate study by the Korea Press Foundation, 46.1 percent of local elementary, middle, and high school students said they used Facebook last year, compared to 80.3 percent in 2019.
But positive response to Instagram rose sharply to 81.6% in 2022 from 61% in 2019.
