Facebook responded to 45 percent of user complaints in March in India
New Delhi: Social media giant Meta’s Facebook took action on about 45 per cent of the complaints it received from users and Instagram on 64 per cent of the complaints raised by users in March 2023, according to the company’s latest India monthly report.
According to category-specific data revealed by Meta, Facebook only acted on about 8 percent of complaints filed by users because their accounts had been hacked, 22 percent for “inappropriate or offensive content,” and 23 percent for “bullying or harassment.”
The social media platform took action on less than a quarter of complaints in cases where users objected to content they claimed showed them nude or partially nude or in a sexual act.
Facebook received a total of 7,193 complaints from users and provided users with tools to solve problems in 1,903 cases.
“Of the remaining 5,290 reports that required special review, we reviewed the content in accordance with our policies and took action on a total of 1,300 reports,” Meta said in the Facebook report.
Facebook did not disclose category-specific details of the actions taken on the 1,300 additional reports.
Facebook acted alone on about 38 million pieces of content it found violated its community guidelines.
The top three categories where Facebook took action consisted of 32 million spam content, 2.4 million adult nudity and sexual activity policy violations, and 2.2 million violent and graphic content.
Meta’s Instagram activity was higher, about 64 percent, compared to Facebook.
Instagram received 9,226 complaints from users, of which it acted on 5,936 cases.
The company provided users with tools to solve problems in 4,280 cases.
Instagram provided tools in about 98.57 percent of cases where the content was visible to the editor and the editor did not want to be seen.
Instagram responded to 391, or 84 percent, of the 465 complaints where users reported nudity or partial nudity or sexual activity. It took the least action on complaints about hacked accounts.
“Of the remaining 4,946 reports that required special review, we reviewed the content in accordance with our policies and took action on a total of 1,656 reports,” Meta said of Instagram’s actions.
In the report, the company did not provide details about the category or policy of the 1,656 reports.
Instagram alone acted against about 3 million pieces of content. The biggest violations were found in the category “Adult nudity and sexual activity”, violent and graphic content category and “Bullying and harassment”.
Meta received only one order from the GAC to act upon.
