Microsoft-owned open source developer platform GitHub has announced Copilot X, the company’s vision for the future of AI-based software development.

GitHub has adopted OpenAI’s new GPT-4 model and introduced chat and voice to Copilot, bringing Copilot to fetch requests, command line, and documentation to answer developers’ questions about their projects.

“From reading documents to writing code to submitting pull requests and beyond, we strive to personalize GitHub Copilot for every team, project, and repository where it’s used, creating a radically improved software development lifecycle,” Thomas Dohmke, GitHub’s CEO, said in a statement.

“At the same time, we’re continuing to innovate and update the heart of GitHub Copilot – the AI pair programmer that started it all,” he added.

The company brings a chat interface to the editor – “Copilot chat”, which focuses on developer scenarios and natively integrates with VS Code and Visual Studio.

Copilot chat recognizes what code the developer has written and what error messages are displayed, and is deeply embedded in the IDE (Integrated Development Environment).

Copilot chat is also related to GitHub’s voice code AI technology extension that the company previously introduced, which it now calls “Copilot voice,” where developers can verbally issue natural language prompts, according to the company.

In addition, developers can now sign up for a technical preview of the first AI-generated descriptions on GitHub.

This new feature comes from OpenAI’s new GPT-4 model and adds support for AI-based tags in pull request descriptions via a GitHub app that can be installed by organization administrators and individual repository owners.

GitHub is also releasing Copilot for docs, an experimental tool that uses a chat interface to provide users with AI-generated answers to documentation questions — including questions from developers about the languages, frameworks and technologies they use, the company said.
