Google China is now starting to lay off workers

Google is now laying off senior employees and high-paid workers in China as part of a global announcement, media reported on Monday.

The company’s goal is to “restore wage levels and lower operating costs while improving overall work efficiency,” reports Pandaily.

Compensation includes a stock and annual leave discount, as well as 30,000 yuan ($4,339) in cash and health insurance, and these benefits can only be obtained by signing a severance agreement before March 10, the report said.

“Additionally, Google has offered laid-off employees a three-month buffer period during which they cannot work but will continue to receive their normal wages,” it added.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, recently laid off 12,000 workers and up to 100 robots that cleaned its cafeterias at its headquarters. The company laid off around 400 employees in India as part of the global announcement.

In a January 20 letter to employees, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that about 12,000 people will be laid off worldwide, which is more than 6 percent of the entire workforce.

Several Google employees took to social media, especially LinkedIn, to tell about the predicament.

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai denied the layoffs were “random” but said they were “deeply sorry” for the workforce cuts.

In an email to employees, Pichai said he takes “full responsibility for the decisions that got us here.”

The layoffs at Google’s parent company were expected amid a deepening financial winter that has hit companies of all sizes amid fears of a global recession and recession.
