Google claims Android smartphones will be more secure in 2023: Here’s how

Google continues to improve Android security, but regular malware incidents suggest there’s still a lot of work to be done. And in 2023, the company says it has made it its mission to make both Android and the Google Play Store safe for users. The application ecosystem is very attractive to developers and attackers.

So it’s imperative that Google tightens up its Play Store processes, and one way to do that is to get developers more involved in security. Android is the platform you have the Play Store on, and the mobile operating system is part of Google’s focus this year to make it a “more private mobile ecosystem.”

Google says that the security segment of the Play Store will be improved and become more transparent so that you know how developers collect, share and even protect your data. The increased focus on user security is also driven by developers’ demands to bring web3.0 tools, digital assets such as NFTs, to Android apps and games.

Google also wants to extend better support to its developers who are looking for advice on how to use better and more reliable Software Developer Kits (SDKs). Google notes that developers now have a better channel to communicate with SDK providers and share issues with their tools through the Play Console and Android Studio.

Android still has a long way to go before becoming a serious player on the security front like iOS. Google claims that its Play Store security measures have improved and it has warned about malware, but the company knows that attackers are still evolving and that zero-day vulnerabilities, which it uses Project Zero and other bug hunters, are hard to detect.

We still believe that Android can become more secure, but its fragmentation leaves us concerned, and Google will eventually have to find a common way to make its way into all versions.
