Google May Bring Dashcam Feature to Pixel Phones Soon: Report
Pixel devices could potentially get a Personal Safety update that brings dashcam functionality to the phones.
As discovered by 9to5Google, Google accidentally made a dogfood version of Personal Safety available through the Play Store, version 2023.04.27.532191641.8-dogfood.
In the new version, the publication found a new feature called “Dashcam” that allows users to record video and audio while driving. Of course, however, you need to mount your phone correctly to keep an eye on the road and, in the unlikely event of an accident, capture a valuable recording of what happened.
Users can access the feature through the “Dashcam” shortcut found in the “Get Ready” section of the home page. It provides a convenient way to view recorded dashcam footage and manually start recordings. The feature works in the background, allowing users to continue using their phone without interfering with apps like Google Maps and others. Additionally, users have the option to lock their phone while dashcam recording is running in the background.
Users can also enable automatic recording when their phones connect to certain Bluetooth devices, such as car stereos, but recorded videos are automatically deleted after three days unless users choose to save them. These videos take about 30 MB of material per minute, and the maximum recording time is 24 hours.
While it’s still uncertain whether this feature will remain exclusive to Pixel phones or expand to other Android devices, given its advanced stage of development, a potential release could be on the horizon.
Today, dash cams have become an essential requirement for people who are often on the road. With the increase in accidents and the growing importance of documenting our daily drives, be it daily commuters or road trippers, the dashboard camera plays an important role.
However, it’s worth noting that quality dashboard cameras can be expensive, and not everyone is ready to allocate funds to an accessory that some may consider unnecessary, but this is where using an Android device as one can come in handy.
